72 Hours

Three days can fly by in the blink of an eye when living an everyday life of sorting clothes, wiping up messes, running to the supermarket for milk or picking kids up from school. I may pause for a moment within that space of time to to check over my master 'to do' list, pencil in hand, prepared and ready to check off the tasks of the day.

Yet it occurred to me that something very important was missing from me and my families master list...

Three days can stand still when surviving a disaster, sorting through rubble, wiping away tears, running for cover, and saving lives. In those 72 hours will I be treading water or waiting for rescue on top of a roof top? Will my family and I be underground, biding our time until storms subside? Are we trapped indoors with no water nor electricity for 72 hours or more? Are my family and I prepared for the unanticipated, unimaginable task of survival? Are we prepared to change our lifestyle within the blink of an eye?

A couple of months ago, I added the task of assembling a 72 hour kit for my family. Don't ask me where I've been for the last 8 years, but now is as good a time as any, right? My little home may not be able to hold a years supply of food and water, but by darn it can hold a backpack and duffel bag full of beans, crackers, diapers, ponchos, first-aid, candles, radio, water and a picture of my beautiful family that it's going to hopefully save.

God help us if ever we are to endure such a trial. God will prepare us if we will but listen.

I don't think anyone can be totally prepared for the unthinkable, but I can breath easier knowing I've checked off one very important item on my 'to do' list.
Can you?

Do you have to remind me of what a terrible job I am doing with preparedness? Well, I will make it a goal for this year. I haven't made any New Year's Resolutions. .. so I ought to have at least one. 72 hour kits for everyone by the end of the year. I can do it!!!
